Allergy Testing Q & A

What is allergy testing?

Allergy testing gives you an answer as to why you’re suffering from symptoms like a persistent, seasonal runny nose, cough, itchy sinuses, and fatigue. The testing helps determine what allergens are triggering your immune system to react.

Allergy testing is usually done as a skin test to get you fast results. If skin testing is inconclusive, Dr. Williams may suggest intradermal or blood tests to get a more accurate result.

Dr. Williams thoroughly explains the testing process to you prior to your procedure. She’ll also help you understand your results and how to avoid allergens and deal with allergy symptoms when they arise. Her goal is to help you find relief from allergies and experience a high quality of life.

How does a skin prick test for allergies?

Allergy testing is usually done as a skin prick. During this test, Dr. Williams places a small amount of a suspected allergen on your skin and monitors you for a reaction.

If a red, itchy bump develops at the site of the skin prick, you’re likely allergic to the substance. The results are available within 15-20 minutes and fade soon after.

If the results of your test aren't clear, you may need to undergo intradermal allergy testing. During this test, Dr. Williams places the allergen just under your skin to get a clearer reaction.

Blood tests are used if you aren’t eligible for a skin prick or intradermal test due to certain medications or a skin condition like eczema. Blood tests can also be helpful in diagnosing suspected food allergies.

Am I a good candidate for allergy testing?

If you come to Dr. Williams with allergy symptoms, she will suggest you undergo testing. Symptoms include:

  • Runny nose and nasal congestion that goes on for more than a couple of weeks
  • Persistent sore throat
  • Unexplained rashes or hives
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Chest tightness and trouble breathing
  • Eczema

If you experience an anaphylactic reaction, allergy testing is a must. Anaphylaxis is when your immune system reacts so severely that it causes life-threatening symptoms like difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness.
